I heard Terri Savelle Foy say, ” The most successful high archivers have something in common, they practice mind over mattress!. The urban dictionary defines mind over mattress as the act of engaging one’s brain in an effort to wake up from deep sleep. This sounds easy, it’s just waking up, right? You will be surprised a lot of people find it hard to wake up early in the morning or just get out of bed at all. The battle of the bed is one that many fail to triumph over. But first, let’s dive into some of the reasons why the battle of the bed is one of the most difficult battles to win.

Why can’t I just wake up, it’s just opening my eyes,

The importance of winning the battle of the bed is so you can live, go after your dreams and goals and turn into reality the life that you have envisioned. If you have nothing to look forward to, no goals, no purpose it becomes harder and harder to win the battle of the bed. When you lose your passion for life, there is nothing to wake up to. Taking the time to get your passion for life back, by setting goals, and living a purposeful & wholesome life is the first and most important strategy to winning the battle of the bed. Imagine you are going for a trip that you have been saving up for months, or you are attending an event that you have been looking forward to for weeks. Mornings are just sacred in my opinion, they set the tone for your day. Waking up early can give you a headstart, whether to invest in yourself before you mingle with the rest of the world or just to make sure you get a calm morning instead of starting the day in a rush because you are late. Robin Sharma emphasizes the power of waking up early in his book, The 5 am Club.

To win any battle, you have got to equip yourself with strategy and tactics. Here are some of the tactics you can use to help you win the battle of the bed.

1. Sleep Early

There is a popular idiom, Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise. It simply tries to emphasize getting enough sleep and getting an early start the following day. Winning the battle of the bed does not equal not getting enough rest or depriving your body of sleep. One of the reasons why people can not get out of bed is because they will be tired and fatigued. In this case, even when you finally get out of bed, you are most likely to be unproductive. It’s sad how some people rob themselves of sleep by watching long hours of television. Sleep early, and get well-rested as you prepare for the upcoming new day.

2. Make Use of The 5-second Rule

Mel Robins’s 5-second rule is a great tactic for getting out of bed. The 5-second rule states that, If you have an instinct to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill it. When you know it’s time to wake up, act it out within 5-seconds by jumping out of bed without reasoning or thought. As soon as your alarm goes off, if you have one, just count backward from 5 and act on your decision to get out of bed. The 5-second rule is also a great tool that you can use to get things done even after winning the battle of the bed.

3. Place your alarm far from you

The snooze button tends to be most people’s favorite button, it used to be mine as well and if we are being honest sometimes still is. It’s tempting to hit snooze and then wonder how you got out of bed two hours later. Placing your alarm out of reach can help you conquer the snooze button temptation. Place your alarm at a distance where you need to physically get out of bed to switch it off.

4. Wash your face & brush your teeth

I don’t know the logic behind this tactic but all I know is it works for me. Perhaps it’s the water. As soon as you get out of bed, try brushing your teeth and washing your face you will be amazed at how this tactic works in conquering the battle of the bed.

5. Make your bed soon after waking up.

You might have managed to wake up and turn off your alarm that is at a distance but one might just turn it off and go back to bed. I find spreading my bed as soon as I wake up as a way to show that my day has started and sleep time is over. When you spread your bed, you reduce the risk of getting back into the blankets. In a scenario where you share your bed with your spouse or sibling, do not stay in the bedroom. Physically leave the room and prepare your day in the other rooms around your home.

6. Don’t fall into the scrolling hole

What is the first thing you do after waking up? for many, it’s checking their phones. It may start as checking for important messages and notifications and then an hour later you are still in bed in the deep pit of scrolling. Remember, mornings are a window period to set the tone of your day. Your phone being the first thing you check might not only be a time stealer but a mood alter. If possible, don’t have the phone with you when you sleep and within the first hour of your day. Be selective on what you choose to feed yourself as the day starts.

And there you have it, for this week’s personal development strategy tip to help you triumph over the battle of the bed and practice mind over mattress. Good luck with your battle of the bed.
