What Are You Learning? The Antidote of Living On Auto Pilot
How Most Adults Live…..
Growing up, I have never admired adults who lived on autopilot; in fact, that was one of my biggest fears and contributed to the relationship I have with the corporate world. Why the corporate world, you may ask? Well, most of the people who end up living in this auto pilot cycle tend to be in corporate because one tends to have the same routine year after year; going to work, coming back way to tired, watch Tv (because we tell ourselves this is the only time I have to myself), go to bed late, go back to work the next morning, wait for pay day, pay bills, and repeat the cycle. Sometimes it gets worse when there is no growth in the job you are in, you might be doing the same thing every day for 40 years! I don’t think this is the best way to live as the best version of yourself.
Consequences of Living on Auto-Pilot
Human beings are designed to grow, to constantly improve. In fact, I think we all have an inherent desire to improve, which is why we end up feeling depressed, sad, and unfulfilled when we live life on autopilot. These are some of the side effects of living life on autopilot.
- Emotional Numbing
- lack of self-awareness
- Identity crisis
- disconnection
- depression
What Causes Us To Live On Autopilot
Good News! This has nothing to do with being in the corporate world; otherwise, there wouldn’t be any hope! It has everything to do with you and growth. When you stop improving, you risk living your life on autopilot and all the other negativity that comes with that. The antidote to this “disease” is learning. To live life as the best version of yourself, you have to be intentional about learning. It does not have to be something new all the time; it could be improving a skill. If you are in a corporate environment, always innovate and find ways to make your tasks better. What are you currently learning?
What Does God Say About Stagnation?
Personal growth depends on CANI ( Constant and Never Ending Improvement), which is why there is no destination. The bible is the number one source of our personal growth guide, and it shows that God intended us to always be learning and growing. In the scriptures, Apostle Paul references the growth levels the church was going through, “from when you were children to now that you are adults”. This was referring to their spiritual growth; they had to grow into being adults, even in their spiritual growth. Accepting the gospel was only the beginning. The next level is always achieved through Learning.
Practical Steps
Let’s get practical about this. Today’s personal growth tip is not necessarily about the intangible soft skills but the skills that produce visible fruit. List the areas you need to improve on; it could be drafting reports, gardening, or any skills that are relevant to you. Pick one that you would like to improve on and set aside time daily to learn and improve that skill.
On another sheet, list new skills that you would like to acquire. It could be sewing, coding, designing, whatever you can think of. Pick one skill you would like to start with until you are good at it. This way, you are always trying new things or improving a skill. As a student of personal growth, learning should be your best buddy.
Remember, the antidote to an autopilot life is learning. Make learning your best friend.
